Counterfactual thinking and recency effects in causal judgment

چکیده

People tend to judge more recent events, relative earlier ones, as the cause of some particular outcome. For instance, people are inclined that last basket, rather than first, caused team win basketball game. This recency effect, however, reverses in cases overdetermination: outcome when event is individually sufficient but not necessary for In five experiments (N = 5507), we find evidence effect and primacy causal judgment. Traditionally, these effects have been a problem counterfactual views However, argue an extension model judgment explains both effect. line with predictions our extended model, also that, regardless structure, imagine alternative one. Moreover, manipulating this tendency affects judgments ways predicted by model: asking participants weakens interaction between strengthens structure. We discuss results relation work on thinking, modeling, late-preemption.

From counterfactual simulation to causal judgment

In this paper, we demonstrate that people’s causal judgments are inextricably linked to counterfactuals. In our experiments, participants judge whether one billiard ball A caused another ball B to go through a gate. Our counterfactual simulation model predicts that people arrive at their causal judgments by comparing what actually happened with the result of mentally simulating what would have ...

Counterfactual thinking in moral judgment: an experimental study

Counterfactual thinking is thinking about a past that did not happen. This is often the case in "if only…" situations, where we wish something had or had not happened. To make a choice in a moral decision-making situation is particularly hard and, therefore, may be often associated with the imagination of a different outcome. The main aim of the present study is to investigate counterfactual th...

Effect of Counterfactual and Factual Thinking on Causal Judgments

The significance of counterfactual thinking in the causal judgment process has been emphasized for nearly two decades, yet no previous research has directly compared the relative effect of thinking counterfactually versus factually on causal judgment. Three experiments examined this comparison by manipulating the task frame used to focus participants’ thinking about a target event. Prior to mak...

Children's causal reasoning: counterfactual thinking occurs for `negative' outcomes only

Harris, German and Mills (Children's use of counterfactual thinking in causal reasoning. Cognition, 61 (1996), 223± 259), following Mackie, argue that children make explicit use of counterfactual thinking in arriving at causal judgments. They showed that children as young as 3, in explaining simple mishap events, made reference to courses of action that a protagonist had rejected, when that cou...

Counterfactual thinking.

Counterfactuals are mental representations of alternatives to the past and produce consequences that are both beneficial and aversive to the individual. These apparently contradictory effects are integrated in a functionalist model of counterfactual thinking. The author reviews research in support of the assertions that (a) counterfactual thinking is activated automatically in response to negat...
